Cohiba 55 Aniversario Premier: A Milestone Cast in Smoke and Cedar
Share
Some anniversaries are marked with a toast; the great houses of Havana prefer to mark theirs with an object. In 2021, as Cohiba reached its fifty-fifth year at the summit of Habanos, the brand answered the occasion in the only language it truly speaks — that of leaf, craftsmanship and time. The result is the Cohiba 55 Aniversario Premier, the sought-after pre-release version of the Edición Limitada 2021, first unveiled as a preview at the inaugural Habanos World Days.
What immediately distinguishes this cigar is its silhouette. It carries an entirely new vitola named Victoria, an imposing format measuring 150 millimetres by a 57 ring gauge — among the thickest ever to bear the Cohiba name. Yet for all its stature, it is not a cigar of brute presence. Its head is finished with the twisted pigtail, the perilla, that discreet flourish familiar from the Lanceros of the Línea Clásica and the illustrious Behike line. It is a signature that speaks before the first light, announcing lineage and intent at a single glance.
The Patience of Fine Leaf
True to the spirit of every Edición Limitada, the filler is composed of carefully chosen leaves aged for a minimum of two years. That repose is no mere formality: it is the quiet interval in which aromas find their roundness, softening the edges and lending depth to the whole. The tobacco arrives at the roller not raw, but already composed.
On the palate, the 55 Aniversario reveals a medium-to-full profile, ample and warm in character. It opens with creamy cedar and leather, a reassuring overture, before rising through cocoa, roasted nuts and coffee, all threaded with a fine seam of spice. The progression is measured, generous, and unmistakably Cohiba.
An Object Destined to Endure
Presented in a Premier box of five, dressed in a band created specially for the release and limited to ten thousand boxes originally reserved for the duty-free channel, this is as much a collector's piece as it is a great smoke. Time, which shaped its leaf, will continue its work in the humidor — the surest sign of a cigar meant not merely to be enjoyed, but to be kept.
